No other exotic fruit enjoyed such a celebrity status like oranges did. Bananas were too dry, lemons too sour, grapes had to compete with our local produce, and the rest of the foreigners were simply too few in numbers or too unknown to make any significant dent in the prestige of the orange. That and some rushed conclusions in the parliament made it the perfect fruit!
